Sustainability Targets
In 2019, the Group set targets across four key sustainability metrics over a five-year period ending 31 December 2024, using 2018 as the base year.
During this time, copper output was expected to increase, leading to a rise in absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and water consumption. As a result, KAZ Minerals adopted intensity-based targets for GHG emissions and water use to enable the Group to reflect its efficiency improvements from operational changes accurately.
Target areas
The Group’s targets are set out below. KAZ Minerals will set itself further targets for the coming years during 2025.
Safety and health
Eliminate occupational fatalities
GHG emissions
Reduce GHG emissions per unit of sulphide ore processed by 5%
Water consumption
Reduce water consumption per unit of sulphide ore processed by 5%.
Social investment
Maintain annual social spending at or above $15 million, subject to identifying suitable projects that meet the Group’s social investment criteria.
