Energy

KAZ Minerals is focused on improving energy efficiency across its operations and monitors energy consumption at all stages of the mining process. Energy use is tracked and disclosed annually through key performance indicators. Oversight of environmental performance, including energy use, is managed by the Health, Safety and Sustainability (HSS) Committee, with senior management accountable for overall environmental performance.

Before beginning new mining projects, the Group conducts detailed environmental due diligence to assess potential impact and guide responsible development.

Energy efficiency

In 2024, KAZ Minerals maintained its historically low energy intensity at 0.19 TJ per kt of sulphide ore processed, matching 2023 performance. This represents a sustained reduction since 2015, when energy intensity was 0.86 TJ/kt. The Group’s modern, large-scale open-pit mines at Aktogay and Bozshakol contribute to this efficiency through economies of scale, modern technology, and low strip ratios.

Total energy consumption

Energy consumption increased by 5% year-on-year, driven primarily by a 6% increase in ore processed. Higher electricity and diesel usage reflected expanded activity across multiple sites.
