Climate Change
KAZ Minerals monitors and manages greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and its Environmental Policy. Emissions are reported annually and overseen by the Health, Safety and Sustainability (HSS) Committee. Site-level responsibility lies with operational management teams.
We are committed to reducing the carbon intensity of our operations through energy efficiency, operational discipline and investments in cleaner energy sources.
GHG emissions overview
Total GHG emissions (kt CO₂-e)

Change
| 2024 | 2023 | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope 1 | 641 | 619 |
| Scope 2 | 2,308 | 2,221 |
| Total | 2,949 | 2,840 |
Scope 1 emissions are mainly from diesel use at the Group’s open pit mining operations and heat consumption, while Scope 2 emissions reflect electricity purchased from third-party providers.
Emissions intensity
Per unit of production:
CO₂-e / kt sulphide ore processed:
| 2024 | 2023 | |
|---|---|---|
| CO₂ per unit of ore processed | 0.031 | 0.031 |
CO₂-e / kt copper produced:
| 2024 | 2023 | |
|---|---|---|
| CO₂ per unit of copper produced | 7.8 | 7.0 |
How we’ re tackling emissions
We are focused on reducing GHG intensity through operational efficiency and energy transition initiatives:
- Modern mining techniques at open pit operations
- Investment in hydro power projects to support lower carbon energy contribution to the Kazakhstani grid
Looking ahead
KAZ Minerals supports Kazakhstan’s national targets for clean energy which will support a reduction in the Group’s Scope 2 emissions:
15%
Renewable energy share by 2030
50%
Renewable energy share by 2050
2060
Carbon neutrality by 2060
