Consultation and communication

KAZ Minerals is committed to promoting community development and maintaining lines of communication with communities near its operations and potential new projects. The General Directors of the Group’s operations have overall responsibility for community relations in their respective areas.

Regular ‘town hall’ meetings are held between mine site representatives and local communities, in addition to formal public consultations required by law. The Group also hosts site visits for local community groups, to familiarise them with our operations and answer any queries they may have.

Indigenous peoples and resettlement

The Group’s Human Rights Policy outlines its commitment to respecting the rights of indigenous peoples and its approach to resettlement.

The areas where KAZ Minerals has historically operated or developed mining projects have been sparsely populated.

As a result, the resettlement of indigenous populations has not been necessary.

While future projects are unlikely to require resettlement, the Group remains committed to:

  • Avoiding involuntary resettlement
  • Protecting culturally sensitive areas

In accordance with Kazakhstan’s subsoil use law, the Group also:

  • Gives preference to Kazakhstan nationals in its operations
  • Invests in the training of local workers

Strengthening local supply

While local procurement at Aktogay and Bozshakol remains below that of other sites due to their reliance on advanced technology sourced internationally, the Group’s localisation campaigns have steadily increased local sourcing in recent years.
