KAZ Minerals has evolved from a regional mining business into a modern copper producer with global significant assets. Our journey reflects a commitment to long-term growth, technical innovation, and responsible mining.
KAZ Minerals International DMCC acquires Nova Resources BV. The Group is now headquartered in the United Arab Emirates.
The Group completes the disposal of the Baimskaya copper project.
Aktogay’s second sulphide concentrator reaches design throughput, completing the ramp-up.
Official opening of the Aktogay expansion project. First shipments from the second concentrator are dispatched in December.
Nova Resources BV acquires the Group; KAZ Minerals is delisted from the London and Kazakhstan Stock Exchanges.
KAZ Minerals achieves production guidance for the 12th consecutive year despite COVID-19 challenges.
Acquisition of the Baimskaya copper project in Russia for $900 million (cash and shares).
Construction of a second sulphide concentrator at Aktogay begins, doubling capacity.
Aktogay produces 65 kt of copper in the first full year of sulphide operations.
Commissioning of Aktogay’s main sulphide concentrator begins; copper concentrate production starts in early 2017.
Bozshakol commences production of copper concentrate from sulphide ore.
Copper cathode production begins at Aktogay from oxide ore.
Completion of the restructuring. The Group retains high-grade East Region mines and becomes a pure-play copper miner.
On 15 August, shareholders approve a major restructuring. Mature assets in the Zhezkazgan and Central Regions are disposed of. Kazakhmys PLC is renamed KAZ Minerals PLC.
Sells remaining 50% stake in Ekibastuz GRES-1, moving toward a focused copper business.
Secures two lending facilities totaling $4.2 billion from China Development Bank for Bozshakol and Aktogay development.
The Group sells a 50% stake in the Ekibastuz GRES-1 power plant to Samruk-Kazyna JSC.
Kazakhmys is listed on the London Stock Exchange. The Group joins the FTSE UK Index Series with a premium listing.
Vladimir Kim, Oleg Novachuk, and Y. K. Cha complete a management buyout, acquiring 97% of the company from Samsung and other shareholders.
Samsung Corporation takes over management in June 1995 and acquires a 40% stake in May 1996.
The Government of Kazakhstan forms OJSC Zhezkazgansvetmet. Between 1992 and 2002, a series of privatisations reduce the Government’s stake from 100% to 0%.
Kazakhstan declares independence on 16 December.
Smelting operations commence at the Zhezkazgan Complex.
Operations begin at the Balkhash copper smelting complex in Kazakhstan.
